The sinister G-Man introduces Freeman to his new reality Scarcely any more knowledgeable about this brave new reality than Half-Life 2’s tongue-tied protagonist, how do players know where to go? The answer to this question isn't quite what you'd expect. The streets are full of stunstick-wielding soldiers. Still disoriented by the G-Man’s ominous greeting, he wanders into a dystopian future that’s been co-opted by the Combine. Riding the rails into City 17, Gordon Freeman clumsily makes contact with his former colleagues from Black Mesa: Eli Vance, Isaac Kleiner, and Barney Calhoun. The Borealis itself would actually be burried deep in the ice, and we'd have to traverse canyons ( I forget the ice name ) and underground caverns.Half-Life 2’s first level is pretty unforgettable. There would be dialogue discussing Eli, Mossman, and the Borealis, and a plan about how to use it against the Combine, or how the Combine cannot be allowed to use it, and Elis belief that it should be destroyed.įrom here we'd be teleported ( in a scene reminiscent of the Lambda Core ) to the arctic where we'd make our way to an Aperture Science research station set up nearby to study the Borealis, its crew frozen to death in complete darkness about the Combine invasion, or being killed by new 'icey' Xen creatures. Alyx would stay with Eli whilst we go with Barney deeper into White Forest.

Barney and some other resistance would arrive and there would be some awesome dialogue between Barney and Alyx. I personally wish they had kept on with episode 3, it starting exactly where we left. Some developers cling so desperately to their main characters that their complete lack of mortality destroys any believability in the story itself. A true step in the right direction for video games to be taken seriously in regards to telling decent stories.
